Winner Adventure 01: Big Sky Rancher Turned Miami Salsa Dancer

Cade W. | Rosebud, Montana

For Cade, expansive, cattle-filled ranges gave way to tropical allure and salsa clubs packed with people.

“Being a rancher is all I’ve known, and I wouldn’t change it for the world,” he wrote in his winning Go For It Giveaway entry. To him, breaking free meant the opportunity to experience something wholly unique, including some significant culture shock. He concluded his entry by saying, “Imagine leaving the familiar behind, swapping the dusty trails for something entirely new. It’s about diving headfirst into the unknown and soaking in every moment of it.”

Cade soaked it in on glistening beaches, in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, even on the smooth greens of a Miami golf course where a downpour caught him on the 13th hole.

All scenery that couldn’t be more different than back home. Over six days and five nights, Cade and a good friend explored the streets of Little Havana and its salsa culture, snorkeled amongst ancient coral and an entire ecosystem of marine life off Key Biscayne, and indulged in the culinary delights of the fast-paced Miami food scene.

“We drove about 45 minutes out into the ocean,” Cade recalled. “It was pretty windy, so there were some big waves. Just hopped in. Threw the snorkel on, took the GoPro. There were jellyfish everywhere.”

Cade’s responses exposed a casual cool and an obvious drive to experience whatever life offers to its fullest. When asked how he felt about hearing there were sharks swimming in the area, laughing, he said, “I was ready to jump back in.”

At home, the intense business of the ranch keeps Cade from finding time for himself. “I’m always thinking about the cattle and what we got to do for them.” In Miami, Cade basked in the opportunity to live an uninterrupted week with no obligations. “We were in a completely different world. We saw a ton of different sports cars. A bunch of tall skyscrapers—haven’t seen one of those. It was completely different down there.”

The one commonality between the two worlds? The can of ZYN in Cade’s pocket.

Discussing the mystical qualities of Little Havana, Cade said, “It felt like a completely different city than Miami. It felt old and there was lots of vintage stuff around there.”

After fueling up on multiple cups of Cuban coffee, Cade and his friend traveled to the heart of the neighborhood for an immersive salsa class—the furthest thing from life in Rosebud, Montana, either of them could imagine.

“There were a lot of people there. I was really surprised. It was a smaller kind of place, but it was a lot of people getting after it on the dance floor.” Speaking to their personal skills, Cade said, “We both did kind of bad at first, but we got the hang of it toward the end there.” But when asked who got up to speed fastest, he didn’t hesitate for a second, “Oh, I was better.”

Back home in Montana, Cade is starting to look at life a little differently. Considering the impact of his trip, he said, “You only get so much time, and I want to get out there and do as much as I can.” He made sure to leave some words of encouragement for those considering breaking from their routines and taking a similarly adventurous leap:

“Book the trip. You gotta get out there and experience and do what you want to do.”
